Couples Therapy in Chislehurst | Helping You Reconnect

Support to help you understand each other, reduce conflict, and rebuild emotional connection

When your relationship feels broken, it can affect everything

Most couples don’t seek therapy because they’ve “failed”, they come because they’re overwhelmed, stuck in patterns they can’t break, or exhausted from trying to fix things alone.

You may be experiencing:

  • recurring arguments that escalate quickly
  • emotional distance, withdrawal or shutdown
  • feeling unheard, criticised or misunderstood
  • difficulty communicating needs or feelings
  • loss of intimacy, trust or closeness
  • confusion about how to move forward

Many couples arrive hoping I’ll tell them who’s right or wrong, or secretly hoping I’ll tell their partner they’re being unreasonable. But therapy doesn’t work like that. Instead, we focus on understanding the pattern you’re both caught in, and what each of you needs to feel secure, valued and connected again.

Why relationships get stuck

Relationships falter when partners stop feeling emotionally safe with each other. This can happen because of:

  • repeated misunderstandings
  • unmet needs or expectations
  • stress, burnout or external pressures
  • past hurts that were never repaired
  • differences in communication or attachment styles
  • fear of conflict or fear of losing the relationship

Over time, couples develop predictable cycles such as one partner pursues, the other withdraws; one becomes louder, the other shuts down; one feels criticised, the other feels invisible. These cycles are painful, but they are also understandable.

Therapy helps you see the cycle clearly, understand what drives it, and learn how to step out of it together.

How couples therapy helps

I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an evidence‑based approach grounded in adult attachment theory. EFT helps you:

  • understand the emotional pattern you’re stuck in
  • communicate in ways that feel safer and more effective
  • repair ruptures, hurts or betrayals
  • rebuild trust and emotional closeness
  • strengthen intimacy - emotional and physical
  • feel more like a team again

EFT goes deeper than communication skills. It helps you understand why you react the way you do, and how to reach for each other in ways that feel supportive rather than threatening.

What working with me feels like

Couples often tell me they expected therapy to feel intimidating, sitting with a stranger talking about arguments, intimacy, or the things you’ve never said out loud. I acknowledge that openly, sometimes with gentle humour, because naming the awkwardness helps you relax and trust the process.

My style is empathic, steady and human, but I’m also prepared to challenge you both when it’s needed. Couples often say this combination helps them feel understood, not judged, and makes it easier to be honest, vulnerable and hopeful again.

To ensure the work feels balanced and safe for both partners, we always begin together. The structure usually looks like this:

  • Two sessions together to understand your dynamic and the cycle you’re stuck in
  • One individual session each, giving both partners space to explore their experience privately
  • Then back to joint sessions, where we work on connection, communication and repair

This approach helps you both feel equally supported, avoids any sense of bias, and strengthens the foundation for deeper relational work.

What we work on together

In sessions, we will:

  • identify the cycle you’re stuck in
  • understand what each of you needs to feel secure
  • reduce conflict and emotional flooding
  • repair past hurts with care and accountability
  • rebuild trust, closeness and connection
  • strengthen communication and shared meaning
  • create a more stable, loving foundation for your future

The aim isn’t perfection, it’s connection, clarity and a relationship that feels more secure and more satisfying for both of you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if our arguments escalate in the session?

I help you slow down, regulate and stay connected enough to talk safely. You won’t be left to struggle through conflict alone.

Can couples therapy help after betrayal or infidelity?

Yes. EFT is particularly effective for repairing trust and rebuilding emotional connection after significant ruptures.

Can we bring our children to the session, or have them present if we’re working remotely?

For couples therapy to feel safe, focused and fair for both partners, sessions need to take place without children present. This helps you both speak openly, explore difficult emotions, and stay engaged in the process without worrying about little ears or interruptions.

If you have children, remote sessions are often the easiest option. It’s completely fine if one or both of you need to pause briefly to attend to them. What matters most is that the session remains a space where you can both concentrate on your relationship and feel able to talk freely.

How long does couples therapy take?

It varies. Some couples feel relief quickly; others benefit from longer‑term work. We regularly check in to ensure the process feels helpful and manageable.

Schedule an introductory call

If you’re ready to explore if couples therapy could help, even if your partner feels unsure, you’re welcome to book a short intro call. Many couples find that this relaxed first conversation helps both partners understand what therapy actually involves and whether it feels right for them.
